Iker Casillas back for the Champions League
The Spanish number one will play his 131st Champions League game against Copenhagen.
Casillas will be back in goal for Madrid on Wednesday, this time against Copenhagen, in the peculiar version of Russian roulette that Ancelotti has decided to make the Real number 1 jersey, given his failure to make up his mind over the keeper.
Iker was biting his nails on the bench on Saturday during the derby. In 14 years Atlético had never been able beat their capital rivals with Iker in goal. Hero and talisman, but missing on Saturday and missing in the final of the Copa, the other derby Atleti have won this century.
But Europe is a tasty treat and Casillas has let his inner circle know that he’s excited by the challenge of the Champions League, a competition that can open the doors to the World Cup and where he won the hearts of the Madrid faithful by giving them the Octavo (the eighth European Cup, won when he was 19, in Paris) and the Novena (the ninth, where he was the hero along with Zidane in Glasgow).
Now he’s set to play his 131st game in the Champions, equalling Seedorf and just behind Xavi (133), Maldini (140),Giggs (144) and Raúl (144).
Iker hasn’t played a competitive match at the Bernabéu for 260 days. That was against Valencia in the Copa, and he was unbeaten (2-0). Sine then he’s only played before his home side against Al-Sadd in the Bernabéu trophy.
