ECUADOR - SPAIN
Ecuador to be without Valencia for Spain friendly
National team coach Reinaldo Rueda left his star player out of the list for the meeting with the world and European champions.
Ecuador coach Reinaldo Rueda has confirmed his squad list for next week’s friendly against Spain – a meeting billed as ‘The match of the Century’ despite the omission of star player, Luis Antonio Valencia.
Valencia won’t be the only player missing for the hosts, Cristian “Chucho” Benítez, who tragically died of a heart attack last week aged just 27, will be another notable absentee.
Both teams will pay tribute to Benítez at the Monumental stadium in Guayaquil. Ecuador’s Football Federation (FEF) have withdrawn the former player’s number 11 shirt as an act of respect.
“Ecuador’s former number 11 gave us goals, glory and showcased the quality of Ecuadorian football to the rest of the world,” a Federation statement read.
The game kicks off at 15:00 hours local time on 14th August.
