UEFA BEST PLAYER IN EUROPE 2013
Cristiano, Ribéry and Messi in the running for UEFA award
Andrés Iniesta, who picked up UEFA’s Best Player in Europe award in 2012, doesn’t figure among this year’s candidates.
UEFA has announced the three candidates for the 2013 Best Player in Europe award, an accolade given to the best player on the continent during the 2012-13 season. The three candidates are Leo Messi, Franck Ribéry and Cristiano Ronaldo. Andrés Iniesta, who collected the award in 2012, won’t be able to repeat the feat this time around.
The three finalists were elected by a panel of journalists who will cast their votes live during the Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on August 29th.
Cristiano ended last year’s Champions League as the tournament’s top scorer with 12 goals, Messi meanwhile finished as the maximum goal scorer in Spain’s domestic league competition with 46 goals while Ribéry played an instrumental role in guiding Bayern Munich to win the Champions League trophy.
Completing the list of the top 10 players of the year are Robert Lewandowski, Arjen Robben, Thomas Müller, Gareth Bale, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robin Van Persie.
Last year, Iniesta, Cristiano and Messi were finalists. Andrea Pirlo ended in fourth place, followed by Xavi, Casillas, Drogba, Cech, Falcao and Özil.
