Coentrão and Garay, makeweights in Matic operation

Reports coming out of Portugal claim that Madrid are studying the idea of including the two defenders to lure the Serbian to the capital.

Portuguese daily ‘A Bola’ is claiming that Real Madrid have entered to fray to sign Benfica’s Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matić. The Spanish side are studying the idea of including Fabio Coentrão and Ezequiel Garay in their offer to get Matić for less than Benfica’s £42 million asking price.

Unsettled left-back Coentrão has put in a transfer request but according to A Bola, he is not keen on a move to Chelsea or Monaco but could be tempted by a return to Benfica where he enjoyed the best years of his career under Jorge Jesus.

Meanwhile, Benfica are eager to amplify Ezequiel Garay’s contract but for that to happen, Real Madrid must first concede the 50 per cent stake they hold of the Argentinean’s federative rights on any future sale.
