Iniesta loans Albacete 240,000 euros to prevent relegation
The Spain and Barcelona midfielder, who is from Albacete, paid 240,000 euros from his own pocket to prevent the club from being demoted to La Tercera División.
Andrés Iniesta has loaned Albacete Balompie the 240,000 euros the club owed to its players in outstanding wages and has prevented the club from administrative relegation to the Tercera Division.
Iniesta is from Albacete and played for the club’s youth team before moving to Barcelona when aged 12.
The deadline for payment was Thursday night and if it had not been met, the club would have been demoted to the Tercera Division.
Matías Martínez, the club’s general director, and Agustín Lázaro, confirmed the news in a press conference on Friday to announce the sale of season tickets for the 2013-14 season, during which Albacete will compete in Segunda Division B.
The deadline for the club’s capital increase finished on Thursday and it is not yet known whether an investor has come up with the money to buy 51 per cent of the club’s shares.
Therefore, the money to pay the club’s debts came from Iniesta.
The Albacete president, a representative for the Iniesta family, said there had been an agreement by the council and asked the club’s fans to buy season tickets because the club is “working on a Project for promotion”, regardless of whether or not an investor emerges.
