Charles at the double as Almería regain top flight status
The Andalucians return to the Liga BBVA after beating Girona 3-0 in this evening’s play-off (4-0 on aggregate). Aleix Vidal and Charles get amongst the goals.
Almería became the third and last team to gain promotion to the Liga BBVA after comfortably beating Girona 3-0 in this evening’s play-off return leg at the Juegos Mediterraneos stadium. For home coach Javi Gracia, this was a match made for experienced veterans such as Fernando Soriano, Verza, Esteban and Corona.
The southerners went into the game enjoying a 1-0 advantage from the first leg and extended their lead on 17 minutes when Aleix Vidal’s low strike had Isaac Becerra beaten. Considering what was at stake, Gracia’s team looked comfortable and at ease during the opening half. They put the result beyond any doubt later with a second-half brace from the team’s top scorer, Charles.
Almería, who spent four seasons in the top tier between 2007 and 2011, are joined by Elche and Villarreal on their return which means that the southern region will have five clubs in the Liga BBVA for the new season with Sevilla, Betis, Granada and Málaga being the other representatives.
