Toni Grande: "Xavi has never opposed our decisions"
Del Bosque’s assistant wants to clear up any misunderstanding over his recent comments to Diario de La Roja.
Vicente Del Del Bosque’s assistant, Toni Grande is keen to set the record straight regarding an interview he gave to web site, Diario de La Roja in which he claimed that coaching staff have experienced disagreements with Xavi Hernández, who expressed a preference to playing alongside certain players and not others.
“He has never used his authority at the expense of another player. As one of the high-ranking members of the squad, he is able to suggest preferences for certain systems or a way of playing but he has always been respectful and would never single out any one player to their detriment,” Grande explained today.
The assistant coach added that Xavi is always been deeply interested in everything concerning the national team. “As a player, he is always worried about these kinds of things. He’s a player who likes to have the ball at his feet; he’s the first to inspect the pitch and to see whether the sprinklers have been used, how long the grass is... He takes a keen interest in tactics and he has tried to make us see certain things while we have tried to let him see our way of understanding things!”
Grande also showed support for Iker Casillas. As he continued, “Iker has achieved everything there is to achieve in football. Some people haven’t respected him. Despite his limited number of playing time, an expert player like him is good enough for us. He is going to continue guarding the goal with the same confidence as he always has done. What he has been through has only made him stronger – it has made him view the world as a place which can sometimes be cruel and that has made him stronger”.
