Atlético Madrid look to bring in Álvaro Negredo and Diego
The Sevilla striker is Atlético's first choice to replace Falcao, while coach Diego Simeone has expressly requested Diego's signing from Wolfsburg.
Atlético Madrid want to add two names to their squad next season: Álvaro Negredo and Diego. Following the departure of Falcao to Monaco, striker Negredo is seen as the Colombian’s replacement at the Vicente Calderón. Meanwhile, Atleti coach Diego Simeone has expressly requested that ‘Los Colchoneros’ bring in Brazilian Diego, who is currently at Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.
Negredo is the preferred option as Atlético look for a new striker. Despite the recent sale of Jesús Navas to Manchester City, Sevilla’s remain in need of funds. As a result, the Spain international’s exit from the Sánchez Pizjuán is more likely, and the deal could be completed this month.
However, ‘Los Rojiblancos’ are also sounding out other alternatives. Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke and Oscar Cardozo of Benfica are on Atlético’s radar. The Madrid club have made an offer for Cardozo, who is also interesting Fenerbahce (although the threat of a UEFA ban hanging over the Turks may see the Paraguayan favour a move to the Spanish capital). Nevertheless, the fact that Negredo would not require a period of adaptation to Spanish football is expected to give him the edge over these two options.
Simeone’s other key target is Diego. ‘El Cholo’ is eyeing the player with a view to raising his side’s quality on the ball. Talks have begun, but so far without haste: the signing of a striker remains the priority. Diego, who is on holiday in Brazil, continues to insist that he only sees himself returning for pre-season training at Wolfsburg.
