The statue of Cristiano Ronaldo in his native Funchal, capital city in the island of Madeira, was vandalized this evening after the bust of the Real Madrid player was altered with red paint with Messi and a number 10 daubed on the back of the life-size work. The act has been widely denounced and a clean-up operation is under way to remove the offending paint tonight.
The stature was inaugurated in December 2014 by the player following Real Madrid’s winning the World Club Cup in Marrakesh beating Argentine side, San Lorenzo. The statue is located in the Plaza del Mar in Funchal and was a gift from the Madeira regional government and bears the legend 'Best player in the world' (in English).
Cristiano’s sister Katia Aveiro criticized the perpetrators stating, "This is a disgraceful act of vandalism in itself but just shows the levels of jealousy that exist. As a Portuguese citizen it embarrasses and saddens me. This island is clearly still inhabited by savages who have no respect and don’t know how to live in a respectable society”
