The future of the Real Madrid goalkeeping berth seems to be tied to the name of David de Gea. The Manchester United goalkeeper is Real Madrid’s choice to take the baton from Iker Casillas. Contacts between Madrid and the player’s camp began some weeks ago ahead of next season.
The goalkeeper believes that his time at Manchester United has now been completed and he yearns for Spain and La Liga (despite conflicting reports that have emerged in the last few hours about his contract renewal). In fact, whenever he can he takes some time to come to Spain, as he did this week to enjoy a few days of rest that he had been given by Van Gaal. Those inside the English club know De Gea’s intentions. Therefore, they have hedged their bets by recruiting Víctor Valdés, who was presented as a new Manchester United player on Thursday. Valdés is under contract until 2016 and has the option for a further year. But in addition to signing the former Barça man, United are also closely monitoring Tim Krul, the Newcastle goalkeeper that will arrive at Old Trafford if De Gea finally heads to Madrid.
Valdés had words of praise for the player who is now his new team-mate: “De Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world.”
Link. De Gea’s contract at United ends on June 30 next year and at Old Trafford they know that if he is not transferred this summer, he will be able to leave on a free transfer next year (if his contract is not renewed). Therefore, they will not create undue obstacles to prevent his departure. According to the British press, Manchester United have placed a price tag of 30m euros on the Madrid-born goalkeeper, 8m euros more than the fee they paid Atlético Madrid for him in 2011.
De Gea’s arrival at Madrid would cover the departure of Casillas who, following the Champions League final, reached an agreement with Florentino Pérez to continue at the club this season and leave on a free next June. Having regained his starting berth, Madrid’s captain (who has a contract until 2017) has also recovered some of his cache and will not lack offers.
But De Gea will not only take over from Casillas at Madrid, he will also do so for the national team. In fact, Vicente del Bosque has already pointed him out as the natural replacement for Casillas in La Roja’s goal.
