Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone made it abundantly clear after his side’s listless 0-0 draw in Vallecas on Monday night that the transfer market remains open. Reports in Italy on Tuesday believe that Atlético are to return to Bayern Munich with an offer for Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri, having already signed Mario Mandzukic from the Bundesliga champions this summer. Shaqiri, 22, who has been linked with the Calderón previously, can operate on either wing or in midfield, which is the profile of player Simeone is in the market for.
The principle stumbling block is that Juventus are also said to be keen on the former Basel player. It is thought that Shaqiri would prefer a move to Turin and that Atlético’s board are launching a charm offensive in an attempt to turn the midfielder’s head. In addition to Shaqiri Atlético retains an active interest in Ezequiel Lavezzi, PSG’s Argentina forward, and Alessio Cerci, Torino’s Italy striker. A deal for one of Atlético’s targets is expected to go through before the end of the transfer window.
