According to AS readers, Colombia star James Rodríguez is the player of the tournament and worthy of the Golden Ball at the Brazil World Cup, with 36.43% voting for the player that also scored the goal of the finals as well as leaving behind numerous memorable moments in helping Los Cafeteros reach the quarter-finals. Despite being knocked out by Brazil, James pulled a goal back for Pekerman’s men in the 2-1 defeat and further enhanced his reputation with a number of standout performances.
James was followed by Toni Kroos, who received 26.45% of readers’ votes, and Leo Messi, with 14%. In fourth place was Javier Mascherano and fifth Arjen Robben.
AS readers also participated in other open polls, voting for Keylor Navas as the best goalkeeper in the tournament’s Golden Glove award. The Costa Rica international received 53% of readers’ votes, while Germany’s Manuel Neuer gained 37.62% and Argentina’s Sergio Romero 9.38% following his heroics in the penalty shootout against Holland.
In the Young Player Award, Raphaël Varane was voted best player ( 53.27%) followed by France's Paul Pogba (33.46%) and Holland’s Memphis Depay (13.26%).
