Real Madrid defender Marcelo has suffered a torn hamstring, the Liga BBVA has said in a medical report that confirms the problem is “pending further developments”.
Speaking in Tuesday's pre-match press conference, coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that the Brazilian will be replaced by Fabio Coentrao for Wednesday’s Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund.
“A medical exam has revealed that Marcelo has suffered a grade one tear in his left hamstring. Pending further developments,” reads the statement published by Real Madrid.
The estimated recovery time for this type of injury is between two and three weeks. In addition to the first leg against Jürgen Klopp’s men, this would see Marcelo miss Madrid’s Liga BBVA match against Real Sociedad at Anoeta and the return against Dortmund. He would also be a serious doubt for the Copa del Rey final on 16 April.
Carlo Ancelotti has reacted to this unexpected setback by calling up Castilla left-back Jorge Casado to train with the first team, with the 24-year-old a possible inclusion in Los Blancos’ squad to face Dortmund. Castilla players Lucas, Quini, Pachecho and Jaime also trained with Ancelotti’s group.
