Xavi Hernández was named in Barcelona's starting line-up against Manchester City and equalled Raúl's tally of 144 appearances in the Champions League, the most for a Spanish player.
However, Raúl reached that figure with appearances for two teams, Real Madrid and Schalke, while the Barça midfielder has made each of his 144 appearances in Europe's elite competition with the one club.
Xavi has the opportunity to overtake the Madrid legend in the return leg at the Camp Nou, but still trails Ryan Giggs, on 149 games - all for Manchester United - and still going at the age of 40.
Raúl, now with Al-Sadd in Qatar, cannot add to his tally, unlike Xavi and Giggs, whose teams are still in this season's competition.
Manchester was the scene of Xavi's first appearance in the Champions League, coming on in Barça's 3-3 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The first goal in that game was scored by Giggs, the only man to have made more appearances in the competition than Xavi.
