Reports in the UK say Chelsea manager José Mourinho is out to boost the Blues’ chances in the Premier League and Champions League by signing a top-level striker in the winter transfer window.
With current striking trio Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba failing to live up to the Portuguese coach’s expectations, the Mirror claims that Atlético Madrid’s Diego Costa is now on the Blues’ radar for January.
The move would be complicated by Atlético’s asking price, with the Rojiblancos likely to hold out for the 25-year-old’s release clause, set at 38 million euros. Chelsea are not expected to meet that figure, especially with Belgian Romelu Lukaku due back in the summer from a season-long loan at Everton.
Diego Costa was also the subject of Premier League interest this summer, Atlético turning down an offer of around 25 million euros from Liverpool.
