Gareth Bale was unveiled as a new Real Madrid player at the Santiago Bernabéu on Monday lunchtime, declaring: "I hope I can help bring success to the club and that we can win the club’s 10th European Cup.”

For Bale’s presentation ceremony, the La Liga club had installed a background picture of an empty Bernabéu – and a photograph of the player as a child, wearing a Real Madrid shirt.

The Wales international’s first words as a Madrid player were: “It’s incredible to be here. It’s a dream for me to play for Madrid. Thank you for this great welcome. Hala Madrid!”

Clutching his new number 11 shirt, the 24-year-old then posed for photographs with club president Florentino Pérez.

Bale then offered his first press conference as a Real Madrid player:

Fears that the transfer wouldn’t happen? “No it's an absolute pleasure to be here. Florentino and [Real Madrid director general] Jose Ángel Sánchez have made a lot of effort to bring me here and I put my trust in them. I never wanted to go to Manchester United or any other club.”

Pressure: “It’s as much pressure as I put on myself. I want to come here and help the team to win things.”

Real Madrid: “I've always followed Real Madrid and Spanish football. I took a photo of myself with the shirt when I was nine and I followed that dream. I can’t wait to pull on the shirt.”

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy: “Everyone knows he’s a hard business man but he obviously wanted to do business. I thank him for reaching an agreement with Real Madrid. I’m delighted to be here.”

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti: “I’ve had a brief chat with the manager. He’s brought me here to help the team and improve the team wherever I am out on the pitch.”

Fitness: “I’ve been doing my fitness work. I’ve had the odd niggle and when I knew Madrid were interested I wanted to come here. I’ll be in top shape.”

Cristiano: “For me, he is the best player in the world. He’s a massive factor in why I wanted to come here; it comes no better than him and it’ll be an honour to play with him. We’ll have a great team and hopefully win a lot of things together. I don’t think I need to help Cristiano because he’s proved he’s best.”

Florentino Pérez: “He gave me confidence and has made me feel welcome.”

Transfer fee: “The transfer's nothing to do with me, that’s between Real Madrid and Tottenham. I wanted to come here whether it’s for a penny or whatever it was, I want to win trophies and win the Champions League.”

Being paraded on the Bernabéu pitch: “I was very nervous, I don’t know if you noticed. The amazing fans made me feel very welcome; it was a privilege and I can’t wait to get started.”

Free-kicks: “Ronaldo is the boss here; he's the main player and the best player in the world. I want to learn from him. I want to help the team.”

Wearing the number 11 shirt of Madrid great Francisco Gento: “He’s a legend of the club so a lot of pressure comes with that number. I wanted to play champions league football and I want to win the tenth European Cup and I hope I can make that happen.”

Champions League: “Everybody knows that Real Madrid want to win everything; they’re known for that. It was a massive reason for coming here, to try and win as many trophies as I can.”

Advice from former Spurs team-mate Luka Modric: “I’ve kept in touch with Luka since he left Tottenham. He recommended I come here; he knows it’s a great club and so do I.”

Learning Spanish: “I’ve started learning Spanish. It’s very important to learn the language and culture.”

Memories of Real Madrid: “I remember [Zinedine] Zidane scoring the winning goal in the final of the Champions League [in 2002]. Real Madrid has always been the greatest club.”
