Espanyol coach Javier Aguirre admitted that Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Atlético de Madrid was a fair result and said in the post-match press conference, "I have to confess that Atlético deserved to win this match. They scored and produced chances to have grabbed a second goal which was a result of our disorganization. We found ourselves up against a very orderly, solid outfit. We were better in the first half than we were later in the second half when we had a numerical advantage. We were not relaxed on the ball. We have no excuses. Atlético were well organized during the full 90 minutes and a mistake in our aerial play meant we lost the ball and that lead to the penalty and opening goal", Aguirre told reporters.
Regarding his team's future, the Mexican added that they must go home and reflect on what went wrong and make amends as soon as possible. "Losing at the Vicente Calderón was always a strong possibility. It is very hard to take on this Atlético side and match them. I congratulate them for the great season they are enjoying and I wish them the best of luck. We must analyze our situation with calm, continue working so that we can reach our objective sooner rather than later", he concluded.
