Iker Casillas came off injured in the 16th minute of the Copa del Rey second leg against Valencia. The Real Madrid and Spain keeper was kicked in the hand by teammate Arbeloa and was then attended to by a medic for nearly three minutes on the pitch, before deciding to come off, making way for Adán. The goalkeeper was seen at the start of the second half with an ice bag on the affected hand. According to initial reports the main damage was done to the thumb on his left hand, affecting a tendon. The area is very inflamed, but it would appear no bones were broken. No indication of the recovery period has been given as yet.
The incident occurred during a Valencia corner. Casillas came off his line but failed to get the ball, which fell amongst a melee of players. Just as Iker went for the ball, Arbeloa tried to clear, catching the keeper's hand full on. The Real Madrid number one went down in pain, before almost immediately taking the glove off. Having decided he could no longer continue Cristiano Ronaldo took the captain's arm band.
Adán and Casillas have been scrapping for the number one spot after Mourinho dropped the long time Real Madrid first choice. This wasn't the first time Real Madrid have changed keeper mid-match this season. In the league game against Real Sociedad at home, Adán was sent off after six minutes and Casillas replaced him.
