Barcelona have announced that Eric Abidal has gone into hospital to undergo tests and analyse the evolution of the liver transplant he received last April.
The French defender will spend three to four days in the Hospital Clinic in the Catalan capital.
The club stated: "On the request of the player, we ask that everyone respects his right to privacy and confidentiality".
Abidal signed for Barcelona from Lyon in 2007 for 15 million euros. In March 2011 a tumour was discovered on his liver, and an operation to remove it followed, and he was able to come on for the last few minutes of Barcelona's Champions League final win over Manchester United in May 2011, and lifted the trophy after Carley Puyol gave him the captain's armband.
He underwent a liver transplant in April 2012 and remained in hospital for over six weeks, but began training with the club again last month.
