Miguel Reina, the father of the Liverpool and Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina, has declared his belief that his son "would leave to return to Barcelona" to replace Víctor Valdés, who announced last week that he will not be renewing his contract with the club when it expires in June 2014.
The former Barcelona and Atlético Madrid goalkeeper tolkd laxarxa.com that Barça "made my son a man since he arrived there when he was 12 years old until he left" and indicated he would be willing to return.
"I think that Pepe has shown to everyone how good a goalkeeper he is. Right now, I think he's at the height of his career. And I think he'd be the ideal goalkeeper for Barcelona, without any doubt."
Valdés and Reina have been team-mates in the Spanish national side since the 2010 World Cup and both came through the ranks at Barcelona's academy 'La Masia,' and maintained a small rivalry until Reina left the Catalan club in 2002 to join Villarreal.
Valdés's decision to leave the club in 2014 has opened the door for Reina to return to the club in which he grew up.
