Barcelona's sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta said that Victor Valdés' agent told the club that the player would not continue with Barcelona once his current deal runs out on 30 June 2014: "We respect the professional and irrevocable decision of Valdés. We have to continue supporting him, and encouraging him as we have done throughout his career".
Meeting with player's father and agent
"Yesterday we had the first meeting to discuss Victor's contract renewal. In the meeting we told the player's agent and father that the club were keen to renew his contract because he's a top level keeper and because we felt he should continue to be involved with this project. Before we could set out any offer Ginés Carvajal told us that the decision had been taken. A considered, meditated decision that Victor will not continue with Barcelona past 30 June 2014. It's an irrevocable decision and they came to tell us it. Therefore, there were never any talks, and we didn't make an offer".
The executive continued: "The club respects the professional decision of the player. Victor has been here for 12 years and so there is utter respect for him. Now we have to continue supporting him, and encouraging him as we have done throughout his career. He is our player until the contract finishes, he is committed to the club and he will be defending his goal until the end. From a professional point of view we're certain that Victor will continue to give his all for the club. On that basis, we now have to work together knowing that on 30 June 2014 Victor will no longer be a Barcelona player. We'll seek out the best option that will allow us to have the best team".
