Pepe Mel: "Del Bosque hasn't asked me about Rubén Castro"

"Rubén has shown for a long time now that he is a goalscorer. He doesn't need much of a chance to score a goal, he has scored 11 times now, and none of them have been penalties."

Pepe Mel: "Del Bosque hasn't asked me about Rubén Castro"

Real Betis coach Pepe Mel was delighted with the performance of his striker Rubén Castro, who scored again as the Andalusians comfortably beat Levante 2-0 at home to leapfrog their opponents in the league and move into 5th, level on points with Málaga.

Joel Campbell gave the hosts an ideal start when he scored after just seven minutes while Castro doubled the lead halfway through the second half when he curled a shot from the edge of the area into the bottom corner.

"Rubén has shown for a long time now that he is a goalscorer," said Mel in his post-match press conference.

"He doesn't need much of a chance to score a goal, he has scored 11 times now, and none of them have been penalties, he's been great."

However, the coach denied that Spain boss Vicente del Bosque had spoken to him about the possibility of calling the striker up to the national side.

"Vicente has asked me about another player, but not about Rubén Castro," said Mel.

"We (Spain) are in the hands of someone with incredible knowledge of football and if a player plays well enough he will get in the team."

The coach's praise was not just limited to his goalscorers, however.

"I feel like a proud father. The young lads (in reference to Eder Vilarchao) respond well whenever they get a chance, but we also have to point out the contribution of players like Amaya, Mario, Chica, Nacho, Rubén and Jorgé."

Mel also explained that José Cañas was left out due to an ankle injury, and not because of his performances.

Mel added that he was excited about his team's run in the Copa del Rey, looking ahead to their quarter final tie against Atlético Madrid next week.

"We're going to make things very difficult for Atlético, we have a lot of belief in what we are doing. We are a very healthy group and everyone in the team is feeling positive."
