Another incentive, adding to the already high morale of his Barça side, is what Tito Vilanova is aiming for ahead of Sunday's game in the Camp Nou against Espanyol (19:00).
Should he get the all-clear, Vilanova is looking to take charge of the team and be back in the dugout for Barça's next game. It all looks to be on course after he made an appearance at the 'azulgrana' training ground at 09:30 this morning. However, he didn't take charge of the training session, and worked behind closed doors instead.
After an operation to remove a tumour on his parotid gland on 20 December (he had a similar operation on 20 November, 2011) his recovery is going well, so much so that he is targeting a return against Espanyol in the derby.
In a series of conferences held in Dubai, Barça president Sandro Rosell said: "He will be back in the working environment in 15 to 20 days, but he still has to spend a few days in the hospital resting. He'll combine work with his treatment. Right now the most important thing is his health; that comes before everything else. At the moment football comes second."
Therefore, everything would point to Vilanova returning to oversee matters in the training session (a morning session for those playing for Catalonia and an evening session for the rest). The idea is for Vilanova's ongoing recovery and confidence ahead of the chemotherapy and radiotherapy he is due to have on Monday 7 January.
Just days before his operation, Vilanova informed his squad of the situation and how it could be overcome whilst also promising that he would be back soon. The operation went well, and Tito was able to watch his side come out 1-3 winners against Valladolid (he was even able to give instructions, via telephone, to his number two Jordi Rorua).
The situation is still serious, but Vilanova's recovery brings optimism with it as he continues to find the strength to try and help his players any way he can to notch up points and pull further away in the race for the league title. A return to normality could be just what the doctor ordered.
