Former Barcelona and Real Madrid midfielder Luis Figo believes his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo still has a shot at winning the 2012 Ballon d'Or, despite Leo Messi being the clear favourite after scoring an unprecedented 91 goals in a calendar year.
"I think that Cristiano has all the qualities to win the Ballon d'Or, he is always one of the favourites to win every individual award," Figo told the Portuguese Football Federation's website.
"He's had a great campaign in the league and in the Champions League and he's always delivered. However, as everyone knows, individual trophies are subject to many people's opinions and it's always difficult to know who is going to win."
Ronaldo, Messi and Andrés Iniesta are the three finalists for the award, the winner of which will be announced on 7 January at a presentation in Zurich.
Figo won the award himself in 2000, as a player for Real Madrid, and spoke of his pride at the achievement.
"At that time there were many players that could have won the award, now there are just four or five clear candidates. It was one of the greatest moments in my career on an individual level, because very few players are lucky enough to have had the chance to win this award."
