Barcelona's French defender Éric Abidal today returned to training with the rest of the squad after a liver transplant in April; however, the day was dominated by Tito Vilanova after he suffered a cancer relapse.
Although the Barça coach was not present to lead the session, which was run by his number two Jordi Roura, Vilanova did spend time with the players before his operation on Thursday.
The sad news was in contrast to Éric Abidal's return to training after overcoming liver cancer in 2011 and a transplant in April of this year.
The defender, who had been training separately from the rest of his team-mates for some time, received permission to train on Tuesday and finally joined the session as he looks to return to first-team football shortly.
Andrés Iniesta and David Villa were absent from the session today with both training in the gym instead.
