FIFA have avoided entering into the debate about who is the rightful owner of the record for most goals in a calendar year, Leo Messi or Godfrey Chitalu, by declaring they do not recognise either player's record.
FIFA spokesman Alex Stone told the BBC that the organisation did not keep domestic records, meaning that neither Messi's nor Chitalu's record was "an official FIFA record":
"We don't have a database which details every football game played in every country from around the world since day one of their formation," Stone said.
"It's certainly nothing to do with bias - if we can confirm records from our tournaments we like doing that.
"It's the sort of data fans and the media like to see," added Stone, pointing out that the record came from the media and not from any official organisation.
"It's a record where someone in the media obviously collected statistics from somewhere and noticed Messi was about to pass that record."
