Ever since Copa del Rey matches became two-legged affairs, the early rounds of the competition have become a formality, with the big teams' passage to the latter stages made far easier.
Atlético are now one of those teams, and after their 3-0 victory in Jaén in the first leg, only a miracle from the Segunda B side would have prevented 'Los Colchoneros' from qualifying for the next round. It would have made little difference whether Diego Simeone had chosen a full strength or second string team to face Real Jaén, because both sides possess aptitude and attitude in spades. But with a team featuring few players likely to feature against Real Madrid on Saturday, Atlético booked their place in the last 16 of the Copa thanks to a solitary goal by Raúl García, and will meet Getafe in the next round.
It would have been a perfect night for Simeone's side were it not for the injury to Cristian 'Cebolla' Rodríguez. With five minutes remaining in the game the Uruguayan fell to the ground clutching one of his hamstrings, and will play no part in the derby.
