Tito Vilanova has denied Leo Messi one of his chances to approach Gerd Müller's goals record for a calendar year, which the German registered in 1972, finding the net 85 times. Messi is currently on 82, but he won't be able to beat him tomorrow because he hasn't been named in the team to face Alavés in the Copa. Piqué, Puyol, Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta are also being rested.
Messi will still have six matches to get the four goals he needs to beat Müller. Those are the first leg of the Copa del Rey last sixteen tie against Real Sociedad or Córdoba (it's unthinkable that Barcelona will fail to go through against Alavés after a 0-3 win first time around), the last and inconsequential Champions League group match against Benfica at the Camp Nou and four league games; two at home (against Athletic and Atlético) and two away (against Betis and Valladolid).
Meanwhile, David Villa, who missed out on the Levante match with a slight ankle complaint, rejoined the group for training today and made it on to his manager's squad list despite the fact he's still waiting for the doctor's note.
There are also four Barcelona B players on the coach's list - the goalkeeper Oier, along with Sergi Roberto, Deulofeu and Planas.
The complete team is as follows: Pinto, Oier, Fàbregas, Puyol, Villa, Thiago, Pedro, Tello, Adriano, Song, Mascherano, Montoya, Dos Santos, Sergi Roberto, Deulofeu and Planas.
