Valeri Karpin has been named as the interim coach of Spartak Moscow after former Valencia coach Unai Emery was sacked on Sunday after a humiliating defeat at home to Dinamo Moscow.
Karpin, who has spent the last few months as director of football of the club, will take over until the end of this year, according to Russian press agencies.
He has already coached the club previously, stepping into the post in April 2009 when Michael Laudrup was sacked.
Emery was swiftly removed from his duties following the defeat on Sunday, which came just days after the club were knocked out of the Champions League and the Europa League after losing 3-0 to Barcelona in the Luzhniki stadium, condemning them to finishing bottom of their group. At present Spartak are seventh in the Russian Premier League, ten points behind league leaders CSKA Moscow and have also been knocked out of the Russian domestic cup.
