German tabloid 'Bild' claims that Manchester City have made an offer for Mesut Özil in the last week, and has speculated that this was the reason why the Germany international did not play against Roberto Mancini's side on Wednesday.
Özil started Madrid's last league game, against Athletic Bilbao, but was not even given a minute's action in the Etihad stadium, with Mourinho preferring the midfield pairing of Luka Modric and Sami Khedira alongside Xabi Alonso.
Özil has a contract with 'Los Blancos' until 2016 and is Mourinho's preferred attacking midfielder. He has played in all of Madrid's 12 league games this season, but has completed just four matches, and was substituted on two occasions at half-time, against Sevilla and Deportivo, with Sergio Ramos putting the departed midfielder's shirt underneath his own shirt, in solidarity with his team-mate.
Until the game with City, Özil had played in all of Madrid's four games in the Champions League.
