Lionel Messi was visibly incensed after Argentina drew 0-0 with Saudi Arabia in a friendly in Riyadh on Wednesday.
"We gave the game away," Messi told journalists after the match at the Rey Fahd stadium.
"It is a real shame to finish the year like this after all we had achieved up to this point.
"We didn't go about the game in the way we should have done at the start. Although we played better later in the game, we couldn't get the win. We have to make sure this never happens again. We've messed up today because when you play for Argentina, you are expected to win, and today we didn't win."
For the Barcelona forward, the fact that it was a non-competitive game was no consolation.
"Every game is important, even friendly matches like today's" he said.
Messi acknowledged that "2012 was a very good year for Argentina" but re-emphasised his disappointment at the result against Saudi Arabia: "I'm furious by what happened today."
