Athletic Bilbao midfielder Markel Susaeta has had a controversial start to his Spain career, before he has even kicked a ball wearing the colours of 'La Roja'.
In his first press conference with the Spanish national side, the Basque-born player avoided mentioning the word 'Spain', and has already provoked criticism on social media for his performance in front of the media.
He said: "We represent..a thing..and well, we have to give our all and show respect in all circumstances."
However, Susaeta was keen to show his delight at being called up to the Spain squad by Vicente Del Bosque, emphasising his excitement at the prospect of playing alongside so many quality players.
"It's a tremendous joy to participate in this group, in this game. I will enjoy every minute with these great players, they are the champions of the world and Europe.
"Truly, it is an honour to share training and a game with them, so I am very happy to be here."
Susaeta, 25, could make his debut for Spain against Panama on Wednesday. He has made several appearances for the Spain under-21 side.
